MonBones Research Project

Monasticism, Archaeozoology, Bioanthropology, Diet, Health

MonBones provides a new angle from which to examine diet, health, economy and society in monastic and lay contexts from the 14th to the 19th centuries. By means of an interdisciplinary approach and a theoretically sophisticated framework, this project aims to explore the life of Santa Maria de Pedralbes, Santa Maria de Jerusalem, Santa Caterina, and Sant Agustí Vell, four monastic houses (belonging to two female and two male orders respectively) as well as El Born, a secular site, through a series of joint lines of enquiry based mainly on the analysis and interpretation of animal and human skeletal remains. All sites are situated in the city of Barcelona, they have been the object of archaeological excavations in recent years, and they all cover a similar time-spam: between the late Middle Ages to the Modern period.
